Anyone willing to share any sort of portfolio review routine or strategy =
that they utilize toward the end of the term?
I teach at a large New York City high school and we are in the process =
of overhauling our Art department so that
there is a solid four year studio sequence resulting in a very strong =
portfolio. Students would in theory be armed and ready
for either job or school interviews. Yet, and here's the kicker, the =
majority of our students, for a variety of reasons, do not=20
travel down that happy life after high school route. So, this portfolio =
they have been continually working on, for them seems rather
pointless. Understandably they ask, "What's the point? Why should I =
show up for a portfolio review every June?" We are trying to come
up with some answers.
The June portfolio review, for grades 10 thru 12, is meant as a final =
performance of sorts when the student presents the work to at least two=20
teachers who suggest and commend. This is in theory a great opportunity =
for student/teacher bonding, could raise the status of the Art =
department
in the eyes of the administration and make all parties involved =
(teachers and students) feel like what they are doing as some worth =
beyond that one assignment.
The attendance rate to these June reviews are dismal.
What can we do?
