Thanks Jeannie for the idea- here's one for you! 6th, 7th & 8th Grades
I have a bucket of "odd" products. STUFF like plugs off of Paper rolls,
spout from a hamster bottle, stick butter spreaders etc. (garage sales are
good for this) We begin by discussing careers in design and how we are
affected/influenced by the designers creativity. As a group, we then analyse
a typical school chair in terms of its features and benefits (ie. adjustable
feet, molded plastic seat, steel legs, welded joints etc.). In my
experience, I usually have to start them out describing the first "feature"
and talk about why that feature is important to the consumer (benefit) -but
right after they see where its going, the hands begin to raise and the whole
class is "spewing" out features and benefits! When this happens they are
ready for the activity. Have them pick a product from the bucket. In a
group (I have them in groups of 4), "invent" a new USAGE for the product.
List 5-10 features and benefits. Invent a NAME for the product. The group
must create a visual AD for the product and present the product to the class
in the form of a commercial. This activity is a lot of FUN! I usually
videotape it and show it to the students/teachers later. LOT'S OF LEARNING!
