I work very hard at developing creativity in my students, too. One of the
first things I do in Art I is an exercise which combines the concrete and the
abstract. I teach them how to make cut paper letters from squares and
rectangles of colored paper. Have them cut out their names- saving every
scrap. They then glue the letters onto the back of their sketchbooks( talk
about spacing, readability, etc.)and then arrange the scraps into a "visually
pleasing" design which enhances their name design. They may cut the scraps
into smaller pieces but may not add any other pieces. Sometimes we use more
than one color, or introduce color schemes, etc.
