In my 7th and 8th grade classes on the first day of class i have the
words... "the room is cold" and I tell them how can they tell me that
without saying a word... and of course they do all the usual jestures to
warm up and such, then i ask can art tell you something without words- we
get into a huge discussion on this and it's a nice ice breaker. The I have
them draw (as a group at their tables) an emotion. I go around to make sure
noone is doing the same one- then we post the finished work on the baord and
try to guess what each group is trying to tell us without using words...
hence- just like the above activity and then we go into how artists can show
emotions and make us feel different ways. Opens up for more discussions as I
show them a variety of art works and we talk about them and how they make us
    feel and etc...

My fav activity with the 6th graders though, is I have them look real
carefully at my 2 pictures in my class of Munch's The Scream" (one is a
repo on a ceiling tile and the other is a repo on scratchboard). I write on
the board... "Why is the screamer screaming?" I tell them to get very
imaginative (without being crude) and come up with 2-4 reasons (many come up
with lots more!)- and the best reason will get a special prize. The reasons
they come up with are so fun! After we go through everyones reasons, we vote
on our fav and I buy the winner an ice cream in the lunchroom (teachers get
a discount). This opens up art criticsm for me since they are going through
all the steps. I like doing this and they do too! Gets them talking about
art and they don't even realize it until it is to late , but it's to late
for them becaue they are hooked and know it's not hard to talk about art and
be able to have an opinion.
Can't wait to see what works for others:)
