First of all, I'm sorry I don't know how to highlight excerpts from the
previous posts or I would add them to this post. However, anyone following
this thread will understand this response. Holly responded to my Portfolio
post and Jan's question about how do I manage to store all the work for 434
students with a remark that only that I and only people the know my situation
(as Holly does, as she and I are friends living on LI) would understand.
Jan, Holly wouldn't hurt a flea. Your question, Jan, about how I store all
the artwork was a great one and perfectly valid. Holly just didn't want
anyone to hate me (so Holly thank you for your kind and generous words about
me) when I tell you that storage is no problem for me.
So here's the answer to Jan's question: I teach 434 K-5 in relatively modern
school in a 40'x40' art room with a 14'x14' attached closet. I also have
another 10'x10' closet for art supplies. The district allows me as many
plastic storage bins as I need (which I label and stack) as well as all the
supplies I need (36'x24" Tru-Ray paper) to make the portfolios. The
district is in the process of building me 40' of shelving across the back of
one wall of my room, which, of course-LOL- I designed! One other wall is all
windowed with big sliders from end to end with storage underneath. Another
wall has 4 new low Corian sinks with Corian counter tops for the students and
a huge higher double work sink for me, which, of course, I designed-LOL.
Above and below the sinks? More storage. It's Art Teacher Heaven!!!!! But,
you must know to get the proper perspective, that before this job which I
got only two years ago, I worked at a school for 10 years with 4 floors NO
ART ROOM, one lousy cart, no sinks in the classrooms, and only an unheated
closet for both me and supplies! I went from Hell to Heaven! I work just as
hard as I did without the room, but in a whole different way. I can put my
energies into a more productive way of teaching.
So there you have it....hope it clarified the situation... Susan on Long
    Island
