I did a great lesson (if I do say so myself) with 5th and 6th graders using
aboriginal art. First I showed a national geographic video on australia that
included aboriginal art making. We looked at laminated artwork I took from a
calendar and I showed one on the overhead. We analyzed it sybolically as a
map-talking about anscesters and waterholes and celebration sites etc. Then
we did something to warm up for pattern and color-can't remember what and
then kids made their own "maps" with their own "keys". I remember one odd
one of the OJ Simpson courtroom bird eye view. I had pretty good success and
    it was creative for them.
