I remember wanting to draw when I was 8 years old and my mother said I could
make things look real. This was 1956.
In 6th grade, 1959, my teacher Mrs. Harrington let me draw the animals of
South America on a big piece of illustration board with colored pencils. I
worked on this for days and I was worried that it looked bad. She was so
excited and put it up on the board. She made me feel good about doing art
and I will have to admit that it was this that changed my life.
In High School 1964 my junior year, my teacher Mr. Roundtree sat me outside
and asked what I was going to do with my life? He then proceeded with a
comment that I should be an artist because I had the talent. When it came
time to decide what to do I went to college as an art major. I became a
teacher because of the influence he made on me and how important it was. I
don't regret it.
