My elementary experience was somewhat lacking, you could say. I went to
Catholic school. There were 50 children in my class. On Friday afternoons in
sixth grade we started to have art class for the first time. The nun passed
out our green copy books with the lined pages. Then she passed out little 4" x
5" reproductions. We all got the same one. We had to glue them to the left
hand page. Then we had to copy them exactly. We used 8 Permapress crayons to
do this. We got one box each year. So by the end of the year they were pretty
stubby. I remember two of the pictures we had to do. One was that
expressionist painting of the colorful horses. I forget the title. The other
was the Last Supper. That was a real challenge. We had to copy it on the
right hand side of the book exactly the same size as our reproduction. We got
this assignment towards the end of the year so my crayons were all broken and
stubby. Those twelve tiny figures and Jesus and the table etc. were so small.
We did get to create an original one inch wide border around the whole thing.
I loved this part because I could do it any way I liked. I loved these Friday
art classes and couldn't wait for Friday afternoons.
