that's the type of budget I had for 5 years teaching HS. On the first day of
school I made up a 'suggested art supply list' and a required materials
list. I didn't beat around the bush with the kids, I told them I buy in
quantity, not quality and if they wanted to have better stuff (and most did)
then they were welcome to borrow my art supply catalogues.
Have you thought about requesting an art fee from the kids? It was $3 to
join the art club- so ala, petty cash for emergency materials from the
store. My art club helped supplement my budget big time by having fund
raisers. The best one that netted over $500 profit every year was Argus
Poster Sales (www.argus.com) . New teachers eat up these posters and are
able to decorate their rooms- and the stuff is great quality! Nothing over
$6! You keep half! Neat kid stuff too- even big kids like us! Neat art
posters and tons of inspriational saying posters. They even have an
education version you can share with the faculty. I did this at the
beginning of every year.
Good luck!
